Are you planning on joining the yachting industry, but looking for more information? We’ve broken down the basics to help you get started.
Where can I get qualified: Book your course and medical with us at our partner academies in Cape Town. Once you are qualified we’ll help you get your travel requirements in order to head off to major yachting hubs like Antibes, Palma or Fort Lauderdale.
Why book with Get Onboard: You will spend time training with highly experienced mariners offering you the latest, most up to date seafaring knowledge. You’ll train in state of the art facilities with like minded people who will become your new friends as you enter the world of yachting together.
What are the different departments: There are four departments in the yachting industry, so you will likely start out your career as a junior stewardess, deckhand, junior engineer, or crew chef. If you have specific skills like dive master, fitness, beautician or masseuse there are exciting combination roles for you too.
How do you get started: It is essential that as a crew member you are self motivated, independent, smart appearance and strong work ethic. Once you have completed the mandatory requirements, you can register with the various yachting recruitment agencies that will assist in securing employment.
While there are some initial costs to incur to get qualified and get to the yachting hub of your choice, remember starting salaries are around €2000 per month with all expenses, accommodation, food and toiletries provided.
